Dear colleague
There is likely to be a large strike of a number of unions on Thursday July 10th. With UNISON, PCS, UNITE and the NUT talking about co-ordinating strike action we could have over a million workers on strike.
This means that we will be asking every member to help build this action but also to be involved in our campaigns to engage with and inform parents, the community and politicians about our deep concerns about Gove and his destructive, idealogical attack on education. Our national campaign is called Stand up for Education and there are three ways you can get involved.
A) Could you spare a few hours to be on a stall with other teachers?
We are looking to run stalls on Saturdays through June starting with Saturday June 7th could you spare an hour in Peckham, East Dulwich, Camberwell, Walworth or Elephant.
There have been over 150 street stalls so far this year. They have been really useful in getting our messages across to the public, so we want to hold a lot more this term.
B) Would you and your colleagues be prepared to meet with your MP?
Teachers have organised successful local meetings with their MP. Politicians have come away with a much clearer understanding of the pressures that teachers face and have raised their concerns with Michael Gove.
C) Would you be able to represent teachers from your constituency at a lobby of parliament on 10 June? Could you be released are there any parents who could come
Michael Gove is not prepared to come to talks so we have no choice but to go to Westminster to talk to MPs about our concerns. We would like teachers from every parliamentary constituency in England and Wales to visit parliament and lobby their MP. Divisions will bring lobbyists from those able to volunteer. Talk to your head teacher about release for the day and the national Union will be able to help with travel costs.
Whether you can attend the lobby or not you can send a message to be passed on to your MP and volunteer to get involved in other ways above too.
Local MPs in Southwark:
Harriet Harman
Tessa Jowell
Simon Hughes
You will not be on your own – the Union will provide briefings and support and other colleagues will be alongside you in these activities.
Any help that you can offer would be fantastic. You can volunteer here, where you can also sign up to be an NUT representative.
With best wishes
Michael Davern
Joint Secretary
