National teachers’ strike to be announced on Friday

Dear NUT Representative

We write with an update on the NUT’s campaigning.

The National Executive met yesterday and made a series of decisions about taking our campaigning forward. These include decisions on national strike action this term, parent-facing campaigning and actions to put pressure on all political parties.

Strike Date
The Executive has agreed that the strike date will be announced next Friday, 7 February and reps and members will begin to receive further materials about the action from that date.

Please note that the action will not take place before 13 February, which was a potential timescale for action circulated at the end of last term. There will be sufficient time to prepare for the strike date that is declared next week.

Engage with parents
We will be urging all divisions to set up Saturday leafleting events to engage parents. Local officers will be looking for volunteers to help with these events, so please encourage members from your school to get involved.

Build the pressure
There will be lots of work to do building for the strike, and putting pressure on Michael Gove to engage and make concessions. We continue to hope that we will have other teacher organisations taking action with us but the decision that the Executive made yesterday is that we are preparing to take action alone if necessary.

Please follow us on Twitter @NUTonline to receive regular updates on this and our other campaigns. You can now also get campaign updates on Facebook.

Yours sincerely

CHRISTINE BLOWER
NUT General Secretary
